How to Write a CV With No Experience
Writing your first CV? See what UK and international employers actually expect from a no-experience CV, with a free example.
If you're writing your first CV for a job in the UK or a market where "CV" is the standard term, you're facing the exact same blank-work-history problem job seekers everywhere face — but UK and international employers have slightly different expectations for how you fill that gap than US employers do. Here's what to actually include.
What to Lead With Instead of Work History
UK CVs conventionally lead with a personal statement — a short paragraph (3-4 sentences) summarizing who you are, what you're looking for, and what you offer, positioned directly under your name and contact details. For a first CV, this is your chance to frame the whole document before a recruiter reaches the (currently empty) experience section: state your qualification, your target role, and one or two specific strengths. Follow this with Education before Experience if your academic record is currently your strongest asset — UK recruiters expect this ordering for school leavers, graduates, and early-career candidates, unlike some other markets where experience is always listed first regardless.
Education & Skills Sections That Do the Work
List your most recent and relevant qualifications first, including specific modules, projects, or dissertation topics if they're relevant to the role you're applying for — this gives a recruiter concrete detail to evaluate even without a job history. Add a dedicated Skills section listing both technical skills (software, languages, certifications) and transferable skills (communication, teamwork, problem-solving) — but back every skill with a specific example elsewhere in the CV rather than listing it as an unsupported claim. Include any structured extracurricular activity — school societies, sports team captaincy, Duke of Edinburgh Award, part-time or holiday work — using the same format as a formal job entry: organization, role, dates, and what you actually did.
A Real No-Experience CV Example
A UK-style entry might read: "Volunteer, Local Food Bank, Summer 2026. Sorted and organized donations for a team serving over 300 families weekly. Trained 4 new volunteers on stock rotation procedures. Handled front-desk enquiries, developing customer-facing communication skills." This reads with the same structure and confidence as a paid role — specific numbers, a clear responsibility, a transferable skill named explicitly — while being entirely honest about being unpaid.
